Day 1: Johannesburg – South Africa

At the start of this 14-day South Africa Safari, your guide will collect you from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and drive you to your hotel. Johannesburg, affectionately known as Joburg, Jozi or Egoli (the City of Gold), is a vibrant city with plenty to see and experience. It is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas worldwide. This dynamic and multifaceted city offers a mix of historical significance, cultural richness, and modern amenities. Originating as a tent city during the gold rush, it now boasts a modern skyline and a rich blend of cultures unique to South Africa.

Spend your first day on safari in South Africa at leisure and dive into the modern allure of the Sandton City complex. Sandton City offers more than just luxury shopping; it’s a sprawling, contemporary hub with diverse retail options and distinctive curio shops. Stroll through Sandton Square, where you’ll encounter the towering statue of Nelson Mandela, and explore the Diamond Walk, renowned for its high-end boutiques and designer stores.

Opt for a guided afternoon tour of Johannesburg and Soweto (at additional cost) exploring Johannesburg’s rich history and experiencing the dynamic atmosphere of Soweto. View the iconic Soweto Towers, explore Vilakazi Street, and immerse yourself in an authentic street market experience.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon to meet your safari guide for a briefing at 18:00. Enjoy dinner (at your own expense) at the hotel or in the Sandton City complex.

Day 2: Johannesburg to Hazyview via Panorama Route – South Africa

After breakfast at the hotel this morning our South Africa Safari leaves Johannesburg and travels to the breathtaking Panorama Route. The Panorama Route is a picturesque roadway in South Africa linking various cultural and natural attractions. The awe-inspiring Blyde River Canyon, the world’s largest green canyon, is the main feature of this area of the Mpumalanga Province.

The scenic Panorama Route showcases numerous waterfalls, expansive forested areas, ancient geological formations and iconic landmarks like Berlin Falls, God’s Window, The Pinnacle and 3 Rondawels. Be awestruck by the Blyde River Canyon, adorned with cascading waterfalls and ancient geological formations. We continue on the scenic drive to Hazyview near Kruger National Park, which meanders through lush hills and dense forests. Your expert guide takes you in search of wildlife in South Africa’s top game park which spans over 20,000 km²—slightly smaller than Belgium. You’ll be immersed in this diverse ecosystem teeming with life. Kruger National Park is renowned for its staggering variety of fauna and flora, including rare animal and bird species. The park’s expansive terrain supports 336 tree species, 49 fish species, 34 amphibians, 116 reptiles, 507 birds, and 147 mammals. Look out for the famous Big 5 of Africa—lions, rhinos, leopards, buffaloes, and elephants. Stay alert for the elusive cheetah and watch graceful giraffes feeding among the thorn trees and raptors soaring across the vast African skies as you savour the thrill of your Kruger Safari in South Africa.

We’ll stop for a bush picnic lunch (at your own expense), surrounded by the sounds of nature as we listen for the haunting call of a hyena or the powerful roar of a lion, keeping an eye out for crocodiles or a hippo making a dramatic appearance at a nearby waterhole.

For those wanting an even more immersive Kruger National Park Safari experience, an optional full-day safari in an open safari vehicle with an experienced game ranger is also available at an additional cost, excluding lunch. After your safari, we will exit Kruger National Park and return to the hotel in Hazyview for some relaxation, pre-dinner drinks, and dinner (at extra cost).

Day 5: Kruger National Park to Hluhluwe via Ezulwini Valley – South Africa & Eswatini

On day 5 of our South Africa Safari, we leave our lodge near Kruger Park after an early breakfast and head towards Hluhluwe via the misty mountains of the Kingdom of Eswatini. Hluhluwe is a town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and is best known as a gateway to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, one of the country’s oldest and most renowned wildlife reserves. The park is famous for its rhino conservation successes and its diverse wildlife.

The Kingdom of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a small, landlocked country in Southern Africa. It’s one of the last remaining absolute monarchies in the world. South Africa borders Eswatini to the west, south, and northwest, and Mozambique to the northeast. Featuring a diverse landscape, including mountains, savannas, and river valleys, the country is known for its natural beauty and wildlife and has several nature reserves and parks.

We enter the country through the Jeppes Reef Border Post and drive through the picturesque Ezulwini Valley, aptly named ‘place of heaven.’ It offers stunning panoramic views and access to several notable wildlife sanctuaries. With a culture deeply rooted in traditional customs and ceremonies, the Swazi people have a strong cultural identity with a rich oral tradition, music, dance, and art. The local craft markets are brimming with carvings, beadwork, and vibrant materials, providing excellent shopping opportunities. Don’t miss the chance to sample local culinary specialities like Buganu, a marula fruit drink, or Sishwala porridge served with meat stew or vegetables. Swazi cuisine is a celebration of traditional ingredients and methods.

After a captivating time in Eswatini, we continue our South Africa Safari travelling through three distinct regions in a day as we cross back into South Africa through the Lavumisa Border Post in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. We stop for lunch en route to Hluhluwe and arrive at our hotel in the late afternoon in time to enjoy a Zulu Cultural Experience. Day 6 of our South Africa Safari offers the chance to take an optional early morning game drive in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. The open vehicle game drive in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is an optional activity (at extra cost) and is available if time allows before we depart from Hluhluwe after breakfast.

We head for the coastal town of St Lucia in Kwazulu-Natal, near South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. St Lucia Lake is part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the area boasts diverse ecosystems, including wetlands, grasslands, and forests, offering breathtaking landscapes and plenty of outdoor activities. Compared to other tourist spots, the beaches in and around St Lucia are pristine and less crowded, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing.

As we approach the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, you’ll notice the dramatic transformation in the landscape as we journey through lush wetlands and dense forests. Go on an optional boat cruise on the St Lucia Estuary (at your own expense). With its island-like setting, the Estuary is one of the largest estuaries in Africa and a recognised natural wonder. This rich wetland is home to a mind-boggling 2,180 plant species, over 1000 Nile crocodiles, over 800 hippos and many prehistoric-looking monitor lizards. With over 400 species of birds, it is a watery paradise. Gliding over the water will be a very different safari experience from your Kruger safari but equally exciting. Stock up on snacks before we leave St Lucia, as there will be a late lunch (at your own expense) at our next stop, Salt Rock Hotel in the coastal town of Salt Rock near Durban.

Enjoy a short stroll on the beach before our South Africa Safari in KwaZulu-Natal takes us inland through kilometres of golden sugarcane fields and the small, previously predominantly German town of Wartburg. We arrive at our overnight accommodation in the quaint village of Hilton in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal later in the afternoon. The village offers a blend of old-world charm and contemporary convenience, with well-preserved historic buildings and modern facilities. Relax at the hotel in this historical village in the evening and enjoy dinner at your own expense.

  • Meal included: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Hilton
  • Travel: 400 km

Day 7: Hilton to Howick & Drakensberg Mountains – South Africa

Today our South Africa Safari travels from the charming town of Hilton to the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. The Drakensberg mountain range is the tallest in the country and spans from the KwaZulu-Natal and Free State provinces of South Africa to neighbouring Lesotho.

We set off on our scenic Drakensberg safari after breakfast at the hotel, with a stop at the Mandela Capture Site located near Howick in KwaZulu-Natal. It is a significant historical site where Nelson Mandela was arrested on August 5, 1962, leading to his imprisonment for 27 years. The site has been transformed into a memorial and visitor centre commemorating Mandela’s legacy and the struggle against apartheid. Howick is also famous for its magnificent waterfall, Howick Falls, which plunges 95 meters into a large pool, making it the second-highest waterfall in South Africa.

Following a brief stop, we continue our South Africa Safari through the picturesque country villages of Underberg and Himeville, leading us to the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. The Drakensberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a peak elevation of 3,482 meters that preserves both the natural landscape and the ancient rock art created by the indigenous San people. The Drakensberg is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, including towering peaks, waterfalls, and deep gorges. The range boasts a variety of ecosystems, from grasslands and heath to montane forests. It supports a wide range of wildlife, including antelope, baboons, and various bird species.

We arrive at the hotel by midday, giving you ample time to enjoy lunch (at your own expense). Spend the afternoon taking in the breathtaking mountain views, exploring hiking trails, or participating in various resort activities.

For a more adventurous experience, consider a 3-hour excursion up the rugged Sani Pass (at an additional cost; a multiple-entry visa may be needed for Lesotho). Spend the morning relaxing at the hotel or take a walk to spot black eagles or Cape Vultures. Look out for beautiful proteas, South Africa’s national flower, growing among the fynbos along the mountain slopes. Later in the morning, we descend the mountain roads, crossing rivers and valleys as we drive to Mthatha.

Mthatha, previously known as Umtata, is a city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa situated in a region characterised by rolling hills and lush landscapes. It’s relatively close to the Wild Coast, a stunning area known for its rugged coastline and natural beauty. A significant cultural and economic hub, Mthatha is notable for its role in South African history. We start our day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel before heading to the coast, through the lush hills of Nelson Mandela’s homeland. We pass through the small villages of Qunu and Mvezo, the latter being Mandela’s birthplace and final resting place. This rural area is characterised by goats roaming the streets with many residents practising subsistence farming, reflecting a simpler way of life. Mandela built a modest home on his family property and later a larger residence for his visits to Qunu. Despite his global fame, he remained deeply connected to his roots and the community that shaped him.

After immersing ourselves in this rich history, we continue our South Africa Safari to the coastal Eastern Cape town of Port Alfred by late afternoon. Port Alfred is positioned on the Indian Ocean coast, where the Kowie River meets the sea. The town offers stunning coastal views, sandy beaches, and a temperate climate, making it a popular beach holiday destination.

We drive west along the N2 highway and pass through Gqeberha (previously Port Elizabeth) before entering the renowned Garden Route.

The Garden Route is a celebrated stretch of South African coastline known for its stunning natural beauty, diverse ecosystems, and charming towns. Spanning approximately 300 kilometres along the southwestern coast from the Storms River in the Eastern Cape to Mossel Bay in the Western Cape, it offers a scenic drive through coastal vistas and lush indigenous forests. The route is dotted with quaint towns and villages, each with unique attractions such as local markets, art galleries, and historical sites.

One highlight of the Garden Route is the Tsitsikamma Forest, where we’ll stop for lunch (at your own expense). As we enter Tsitsikamma National Park, we encounter a breathtaking view of the ocean and a verdant gorge from a high vantage point. A short walk leads us to the iconic Storms River Suspension Bridge, offering an exhilarating perspective across the rugged chasm. We embark on an hour-long stroll across this famous bridge, which spans a series of stable wooden structures and stairs, providing stunning views of the gorge and ocean below.

Continuing our Garden Route safari, we drive through the thriving coastal town of Plettenberg Bay before concluding the day in Knysna. Renowned for its natural splendour and iconic Knysna Heads—two sandstone cliffs towering over the entrance to the expansive Knysna lagoon—this town invites exploration. Spend the afternoon discovering its art galleries, craft markets, Gin Distillery, and Motorcycle Museum, soaking up the laid-back ambience of Thesen Island Marina. This unique residential marina development within the Knysna Estuary provides direct access to the lagoon and offers stunning views of the Knysna Heads and surrounding hills. Day 11: Knysna to the Cango Caves and Oudtshoorn – South Africa

Day 11 of our South Africa Safari begins with a hearty breakfast at the hotel in Knysna. Then we visit a panoramic lookout point where you can capture the stunning views of the Knysna Heads and Lagoon before we depart for the semi-desert landscapes of the Little Karoo. Our next stop is Oudtshoorn, a farming town in the Western Cape province of South Africa renowned as the world’s ostrich capital and for the nearby Cango Caves.

The drive to Oudtshoorn takes us through charming seaside towns and past picturesque lakes and mountains. From George, the route climbs the 13 km Outeniqua Pass, offering views of waterfalls and the ocean. The Pass descends into the semi-desert Klein Karoo (Little Karoo), where we reach Oudtshoorn nestled between the majestic Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains. Oudtshoorn retains the leisurely charm of a bygone era and boasts over 400 ostrich farms and iconic ‘Feather Mansions’. Historically famed for its ostrich feather trade during the Victorian era, which declined post-World War I, today’s Ostrich farmers have adapted, focusing on meat, leather, and eggs. The town’s semi-arid Little Karoo conditions provide an ideal environment for ostrich farming, alongside local wine and brandy production.

At an additional cost, you can opt to experience an ostrich farm up close with an engaging and interactive tractor tour learning all about these fascinating birds. You’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy a farm lunch (at your own expense) and sample ostrich biltong (dried meat).

While you’ve already experienced game parks, mountain passes, and estuaries, the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn will immerse you in a breathtaking subterranean world on the Cango Caves Heritage Tour (optional and at an additional cost). These dripstone caverns were formed over millions of years through water acting on limestone rock, an ongoing process as these stalactites and stalagmites continue to grow. The cave system spans over 4 kilometres, though only a portion is open to the public. Visitors can explore different sections of the caves on guided tours, which vary in length and difficulty and provide a captivating glimpse into South Africa’s geological history and natural beauty. Most areas of the caves are accessible, but some require physical fitness due to narrow passages and stairs, while some areas are closed to the public due to natural conservation efforts. We visit the Van Zyl’s Hall Cave and rest assured, despite the underground journey, the Van Zyl’s Hall cave, one of the largest chambers, offers ample space with dimensions of 107m in length and 54m in width.

There is plenty of leisure time in the evening to enjoy dinner at the hotel at your own expense before settling in for another starry night’s rest in the Karoo.

Along the way, we’ll stop for lunch at your own expense in one of the quaint towns on Route 62.

Following lunch, treat yourself to a cheese and wine pairing experience and a cellar tour at one of the exceptional vineyards on the route (at additional cost). South Africa’s wine industry, one of the oldest in the world, has been renowned since the 17th century. With 148 wine farms along the route, you’ll have a taste of the region’s rich viticultural heritage, though we won’t have time to visit them all.
