Tune in to our upcoming Sacred Traditions program honoring the Orisha Changó at 7 pm (EST) on December 6th. This installment, Los Tambores Son de Changó, offers a look at how this Orisha is celebrated within the NYC Lucumí community with a musical presentation by master batá and rumba abakuá musicians.

This digital program highlights the traditional art of batá playing in New York as greatly impacted by master percussionist Orlando “Puntilla” Ríos who moved from Havana, Cuba to the South Bronx, New York in 1980 and shared teachings with NYC Yoruba community on how to properly execute the different rituals related to Fundamento Batá.

The program features some of Puntilla’s students and members of Nueva Generacion who continue to preserve these traditions.

Sharing insights about Puntilla and how Changó is represented and celebrated within Lucumí is CCCADI Executive Director Melody Capote and Chief Baba Neil Clarke, Alufopejo Awo of Osogbo;
Ol’Osun, Awo Ifa, Al’Ayan, and Schomburg Fellow.

Make it a watch party! Join fellow viewers in sharing first reactions throughout the program using the chat/comments feature.

In the spirit of Changó as a figure of social justice, we invite you to support our work of using art and culture to advance equity and justice for African descendant communities by making a gift in any multiple of 6!
