Day 1: Cape Town to Oudtshoorn – South Africa

This 9-day South Africa Safari begins in Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Setting an exceptional standard for the journey ahead, Cape Town, affectionately known as the Mother City of South Africa, dazzles with its natural beauty, including stunning fynbos, exquisite beaches, picturesque mountains, and a rich cultural heritage. It consistently ranks among the top global destinations to visit.

Our safari from Cape Town starts with a collection from your accommodation. Then we depart the city and embark on a scenic drive through the Cape Winelands along Route 62, the world’s longest wine route, heading towards our first overnight stop in Oudtshoorn, a renowned ostrich farming town in South Africa’s Western Cape province.

This picturesque route winds through the Cape Winelands, where lush valleys and vineyards stretch out like a canvas of emerald and gold. Passing through charming farming towns, each with its unique character and history, we pause for lunch (at your own expense) in one of these delightful spots. Here, you’ll have the opportunity (at your own expense) to sample some of the finest wines at a celebrated vineyard. South Africa’s wine-making heritage, dating back to the 17th century, boasts 148 wine estates along our route.

We arrive in Oudtshoorn in the afternoon and check into our hotel accommodation. Nestled amidst the majestic Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains, Oudtshoorn retains the leisurely charm of a bygone era and is acclaimed as the ostrich capital of the world, boasting over 400 ostrich farms and iconic ‘Feather Mansions’. Historically famed for its ostrich feather trade during the Victorian era, which declined post-World War I, today’s Ostrich farmers have adapted, focusing on meat, leather, and eggs. The town’s semi-arid Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) conditions provide an ideal environment for ostrich farming, alongside local wine and brandy production. You might choose to enjoy a glass while savouring a local dinner in town (at your own expense) this evening.

Day 2: Oudtshoorn – South Africa

Today, we have a full day to explore Oudtshoorn, starting with visits to the Cango Caves and an Ostrich Farm Tour. After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, our first stop is the Cango Caves, a natural wonder near Oudtshoorn estimated to be around 20 million years old. These limestone caverns, formed over millennia by water, feature impressive stalactites and stalagmites. While the cave system stretches over 4 kilometres, only a portion is open to the public, accessible through guided tours of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The Cango Caves offer a fascinating glimpse into South Africa’s geological history and are a must-visit for cave enthusiasts.

We embark on a tractor tour of an ostrich breeder bird camp after our cave exploration. Here, we learn about the iconic ostriches of Oudtshoorn, once valued for their feathers during the Victorian era and now primarily bred for meat, leather, and eggs. An optional farm lunch can be enjoyed (at your own expense), and if time permits, we may visit a local school supported by the ostrich farming community.

Complete your Oudtshoorn experience with optional activities like an early morning Meerkat Adventure, encountering these charming creatures in their natural habitat. Observe these burrowing members of the mongoose family as they forage for beetles, rodents, and snakes. Meerkats, known for their vigilant behaviour, thrive in the semi-arid conditions of Oudtshoorn, akin to their native desert habitats in Southern Africa. This excursion is an additional expense and must be booked in advance to secure your spot.

To enrich your day further, the CP Nel Museum beckons for an optional visit with intriguing exhibits ( at your own cost) on Oudtshoorn’s history, including its Victorian-era ostrich trade. After a day of exploration, evening leisure time allows us to discover Oudtshoorn’s diverse dining options, ensuring a delightful end to our day in this captivating town. Day 3: Oudsthoorn to Graaff-Reinet – South Africa

Following an early breakfast, our South Africa Safari will continue its journey from the Western Cape province to the Eastern Cape province as we leave Oudtshoorn and head towards Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape. Departing from the arid Little Karoo region, we travel through the scenic Meiringspoort, experiencing diverse landscapes on our way to Graaff-Reinet. By now, you may have already observed the ever-shifting landscapes of South Africa.

Meiringspoort, a renowned pass in the Western Cape, lies between De Rust and Klaarstroom in the heart of the Swartberg Mountains. It is celebrated for its stunning scenery and was named after Carl Meiring, a farmer and explorer who played a crucial role in establishing the route. This pass has been an important regional transport link for over a century. The drive through Meiringspoort offers dramatic vistas of rugged mountain terrain, winding roads, and lush vegetation. The pass is one of South Africa’s most picturesque routes, showcasing remarkable geological formations such as quartzite cliffs and rock structures sculpted by natural forces over millions of years. The pass, or “poort” in Afrikaans, cuts through the Swartberg Mountains, presenting a visually striking and dramatic landscape.

Our overnight destination, Graaff-Reinet, is the oldest town in the Eastern Cape and the fourth oldest in South Africa. It is steeped in rich history. It served as the centre of a brief republic established by discontented farmers and boasts more national monuments than any other town or city in South Africa. Our safari will take us just outside the town to ascend a steep road to the summit of the Valley of Desolation in Camdeboo National Park. This spectacular natural feature, located near Graaff-Reinet, covers approximately 19,000 hectares and is known for its diverse flora and fauna, including various bird species, mammals, and reptiles.

The Valley of Desolation is famed for its dramatic landscape and unique geological formations, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area. From this vantage point, you can gaze out over the expansive Karoo region, with its flat plains and distant mountain ranges. The views are particularly striking at sunrise and sunset. The area has attracted the interest of geologists and naturalists due to its distinctive rock formations and rich biodiversity. It also holds cultural significance for local communities and has been featured in various studies and publications.

Amid towering boulders, you will witness a stunning volcanic valley adorned with colossal dolerite columns. This natural wonder, shaped over 100 million years, presents a stark beauty enhanced by its seemingly arid landscape, which paradoxically supports diverse wildlife. From this viewpoint, you may spot the majestic Black Eagle or the Kori Bustard, the world’s heaviest-flying bird. The park is also home to endangered species such as the Cape mountain zebra, kudu, and buffalo.

After exploring Camdeboo National Park on our South Africa Safari, enjoy an evening in Graaff-Reinet savouring the flavours of Karoo cuisine at dinner (additional cost) and relax with a restful night at your hotel. Awake ready to continue exploring the Eastern Cape in the morning before travelling on towards Addo Elephant Park.

These majestic animals symbolize strength and resilience, with their impressive tusks and versatile trunks. With over 600 elephants, Addo is one of the premier locations to witness these creatures in the wild. The park’s successful conservation efforts have helped increase the elephant population from a mere 11 individuals at its inception.

In addition to elephants, Addo is home to the rest of the African Big Five—lions, leopards, buffalo, and both black and white rhinos—as well as various antelope species like kudu, eland, and bushbuck. The park also hosts a significant population of the endangered Cape Buffalo and boasts a range of ecosystems, including dense thicket, savanna, semi-desert, and coastal habitats. Notably, the Alexandria Coastal Dune Fields within the park are among the highest sand dunes in South Africa. This ecological diversity supports over 400 bird species and provides a haven for the rare, flightless dung beetle, which plays a crucial role in the ecosystem.

While the park is famed for the Big Five animals, be on the lookout for zebras and various antelope species among its 95 mammal species and numerous bird species.
