Deep dive into African cultures and the world over.
Who and What is culture, how is it shared and how it evolves
Culture and Its Relevance to Africans: Culture is a multifaceted concept for Africans. It encompasses values, beliefs, daily practices, aesthetic forms, languages, and institutions. Nature is part of African culture, often understood as a religious agency. Culture is the single word that explains and justifies most aspects of life, from private domains to complex political institutions. It’s a social heritage, containing vital knowledge and skills for survival and reproduction.
Dynamic and Evolving: Culture isn’t static; it evolves and adapts to new circumstances. Ideas flow in from outside, replacing or blending with existing ones. Islam, Christianity, colonization, Westernization, industrialization, and modernization have all influenced contemporary African cultures. Material culture has transformed due to imported items, and Western-oriented schools shape youth socialization. Gender roles shift with new occupations. The tension between old and new cultures is palpable.
