In southwestern Guinea Bissau there are some islands where a very special people live, the Bissago. What is it that makes them so special? It is not the fact of living in balance and harmony with the spectacular nature that surrounds them, taking from the land or the sea only what they need to survive. Neither is their deep animistic spirituality, which marks their life with rites to acquire the knowledge of their ancestors. What makes them so special is that, in the Bissago society, the woman is the protagonist.

They are the ones who decide how to manage the crops or punish the crimes, they are the priestesses of the temple, those who can communicate with the gods, the forces of nature and the spirits of the deceased. For the Bissago, the woman is feared and respected, since they consider her capable of deciding about life and death.

This documentary focuses on the lives of some of the women of Eticoga, the main village on the island of Orango. Through their lives and ways of looking we will know the most outstanding and peculiar aspects of this matriarchal society so different, not only from the Western way of life, but from the rest of Africa and almost all other cultures on the planet.

Humans were always meant to live collectively and helping each other out, raising kids together and sharing prosperity with one another

capitalism and hyper individualism is ruining the world. Yes it speeds up progress but the end result will always be mass suffering. Slow steady and responsible progress > hyper fast dangerous and exploitative progress

Its so crazy how much we have in common. I am an African American from south Georgia in the USA. My family also believes that when a child is born, an ancestor returns. My little sister was born 9 months after my grandfather died. My youngest daughter was born 9 months after my grandmother died. My great nephew was born a year after my eldest sister died.

I now know where my ancestors originated. Look at the similarities of the Hawaiian, Samoan & many Polynesian cultures before colonization. Men have Failed in their leadership. The world needs to return into the lineage of the Female to heal.

Have you noticed how nice the village is? The people are good looking and healthy looking as work is shared, not dumped 85% or more on womenfolk. I think & believe that it really is time for women to take over running the world. Not the pseudo women/men, who ape men and their views, but true women who nurture and think of others before themselves. No woman would wage war, sending her sons, brothers, lovers to death. No woman wants folk to be homeless, starve, be ground down by hard thankless work…I truely believe that women would make a better job of structuring the economies of the world. But then what do I know, I’m a woman…..

What a civilized and peaceful society and run by women! I wish they would make a movie based on this story instead of making a fictional movie like black panther.
